There are some duos throughout history who shaped American music. Sonny and Cher. Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. Simon and Garfunkel. Lennon and McCartney. And then there was Rodgers & Hammerstein, who earned 34 Tony Awards, 15 Academy Awards, the Pulitzer Prize and two Grammy Awards and essentially paved the way for today’s musicals. Their classic comedic musical, The King And I, hit Broward Center for the Performing Arts Nov. 20 and runs through Dec. 2. It’s a delightful tale set in exotic Siam in the early 1860’s. With actor Pedro Ka ‘Awaloa starring as the King of Siam and actress Angela Baumgardner as Anna Leonowens, the British school teacher who completely transforms his world along with his many wives and children, the duo delightfully takes the audience to a not so foreign place in time where women were not treated equally and not every book could be judged by its cover. The royal children were a particularly enjoyable addition to this national tour of The King And I. Lady Thiang, played by Deanna Choi, struck a meaningful chord with the audience through her emotional number “Something Wonderful.” It’s a wonderful show to see with a bestie or even for a date night. For an additional ticket purchase, you can also enjoy food and unlimited drinks at the theater’s Intermezzo Lounge before the show.
